The challenge:
Transfer the online TV and radio catch up service to the mobile phone, and extend the offering to live programming.
Fjord’s role:
Interaction design, visual design, strategic advice.
Our approach:
Fjord has been closely involved with BBC iPlayer since its inception. In 2008, we helped the BBC extend the concept to the mobile platform. Fjord identified the capabilities of the targeted mobile devices and after some technical experimentation we created a design that is both natively mobile and recognisably a website.
Outcome:
While the mobile iPlayer experience is rich and visual and offers access to thousands of programmes, it is also an experience that is elegant and easy to use. Feedback from user testing has been excellent. The browser-based mobile version of the service is available on a range of devices from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, HTC, Samsung, and Apple. The service has won a host of industry accolades, including the 2009 Global Mobile Award for best mobile music or video service.
